03. The ROI of design education

AI has made design tools easier to use. You can generate interfaces, prototypes, images, and websites in minutes. That has led some people to question whether design education still matters. I think it matters more. When everyone can produce a polished interface, knowing how to decide what should be designed becomes more valuable. AI can make the screen. It cannot replace the need to understand the user, the problem, or the context.

Learning UX design is not learning where to place a button or how to make a screen look good. It is learning how to research, structure information, solve problems, and evaluate decisions. AI can give you ten solutions in seconds. You still need to know which one works, which one fails, and why. Without that foundation, AI gives you more output without giving you better judgment. The faster the tools become, the more important that judgment becomes.

You also do not need to spend thousands to start. Figma's free learning resources include a beginner course covering fundamentals, auto layout, components, and prototyping. Framer Academy offers free courses on responsive design, components, CMS, animation, and SEO. Both companies also publish tutorials on YouTube. If you prefer structured learning, I can also vouch for design and dev, which runs design bootcamps. The tools will keep changing. Learning how to think, question, and make better design decisions is the investment that lasts.
